Henry Fox Talbot invented salt printing in 1839 using paper, silver nitrate and light to create images. In this practical workshop participants will go through the whole process of salt print and will explore its application in their own artistic activity. Albumen prints have the pleasant characteristic of keeping the silver image on the surface of the paper and giving the image brilliance and sharpness. With the technique of salt printing it was for the first time possible to create an unlimited number of prints from a single negative; however, the disadvantage of salt printing was that it never had the brilliance and sharpness of daguerreotypes, for example, because the emulsion penetrated the paper and the images often appeared soft and dull. This disadvantage was only eliminated in 1850 by the Frenchman Desire Blanquart-Evrard, who used albumen as the image-carrying layer and enabled the prints to achieve an unprecedented brilliance.

Our workshop is for beginners. After a quick introduction to the history of salt prints and how they are created, you will be shown how to safely mix and coat paper and then expose your design to uv-light to produce beautiful art. You will be guided in design composition and shown how to create visually pleasing artwork step-by-step.

Der Salzdruck, wurde 1839 von Henry Fox Talbot entdeckt. Er verwendet Papier, Silbernitrat und Licht, um fotografische Bilder zu erzeugen. In diesem praktischen Workshop werden die Teilnehmer den gesamten Prozess des Salzdrucks kennenlernen und ihre Anwendung für Ihre eigene künstlerische Tätigkeit erkunden.

Der Workshop ist für Anfänger geeignet. Nach einer kurzen Einführung in die Geschichte von Salzdrucken und wie sie entstehen, wird Ihnen gezeigt, wie Sie die Emulsionen sicher mischen, das Papier beschichten und dann Ihr Negativ mit UV-Licht belichten, um so ein faszinierendes Unikat zu produzieren. Sie werden in der Designkomposition angeleitet und es wird Ihnen gezeigt, wie Sie Schritt für Schritt ein visuell ansprechendes Kunstwerk erstellen. Der Albumindruck hat die angenehme Eigenschaft das Silberbild an der Oberfläche des Papiers zu halten und dem Bild Brillanz und Schärfe zu verleihen. Mit der Technik des Salzdruckes war es möglich von einer Aufnahme eine unbegrenzte Anzahl von Abzügen zu erstellen; jedoch hatte der Salzdruck den Nachteil nie die Brillanz und Schärfe, wie zum Beispiel bei der Daguerotypie zu besitzen, da die Emulsion in das Papier eindrang und die Bilder oft wich und matt erschienen. Dieser Nachteil wurde erst 1850 von dem Franzosen Desire Blanquart-Evrard beseitigt, der Albumin als bildtragende Schicht verwendete und den Drucken eine nie gekannte Brillanz ermöglichte.
